Web Developer Resource Index: Linux
Linux is a free Unix-like operating system first developed by Linus Torvalds at the
University of Helsinki, Finland. Initially, Linus did not set out to build an entire operating
system, instead he wrote the kernel, or the core OS component. By combining his
kernel with the many software packages already available through the GNU Project, Linux as
a complete operating system was born. Thousands of programmers and other volunteers have
contributed to the project. There are many flavors, or “distributions”
of Linux, mostly free but some commercial ones as well.
Linux is probably the best known of the many Open Source software development resources available for and on the Web. Unlike the BSD family of Unix-like operating systems, Linux distributions have also made inroads in the user, or client-side workstation market as an alternative to the dominate Windows/PC and lesser, but loyal, Apple Mac user-base.
